On June 2, 2022, JVI and a local partner worked together with authorities to rescue 78 survivors (34 adults and 44 minors) from bonded labor in a brick kiln in Uttar Pradesh. In contrast to the factory’s name as the “GOOD Brick Kiln”, the survivors suffered physical and verbal abuse at the hands of their captors, were restricted from leaving the site, and were forced to work 12+ hour days.
After the rescue, survivors were safely transported back to their villages in the rural state of Bihar. Each survivor received Rs15,000 , approximately $190 in rehabilitation funds from government authorities to help with their journey home.
As with all survivors, JVI will work with each of them for at least 24 months to support their continued freedom. JVI’s legal team is working closely with the police and prosecutors to ensure the traffickers are held accountable.
