13 Young Women Rescued In “Happy Land”

October 7, 2020 | JVI

“Happy Land Park and Resorts” sounds like a fun family vacation destination, but, there’s nothing happy about this place! Located close to  Kolkata, India on the banks of the Hooghly River, it is actually a hot spot for commercial sexual exploitation of children.

On September 22, JVI and local partner Freedom Firm worked together with local police to rescue 13 young women (5 minors and 8 women) trapped in commercial sexual exploitation in this so-called resort. The police arrested six suspects who allegedly ran the brothel.

Trained social workers were available to ensure the survivors received counseling and transportation to the hospital for medical check-ups and COVID tests. The survivors are currently receiving proper care and further counseling at shelter homes. The aftercare staff will be pursuing family reunification when it is safe to do so.

The accused suspects were taken to the police station where JVI lawyers assisted the officials in preparing the seizure list and filing the official police complaint. JVI will work with the concerned authorities to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

There are millions of children, women and men around the world with similar stories. Help us change their story one life at a time.
