SLUM DWELLER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
Program Summary
In order to empower the urban poor, JVI is advising and assisting justice ventures in designing and implementing a housing and community development program for 100 families living in the slums of India's mega cities. These justice ventures include Madras Christian Council of Social Service, Chennai Transformation Network, and Habitat for Humanity International.
JVI is providing professional services in the form of legal and financial services, as well as through land use professionals to structure and finance the construction and rehabilitation of 100 units of housing for slum dwellers and volunteer workers to assist with construction. JVI is also recruiting marketing and communications professionals to assist with promoting the project. In addition, JVI is mobilizing grants and below-market loans to finance this project. Finally, JVI is identifying and documenting best practices in developing and financing affordable housing and infrastructure for slum dwellers in India.
The project is expected to allow approximately 500 individuals from 100 families access to decent shelter, water, sanitation and economic opporutnity. Moreover, documentation of best practices and challenges in development affordable housing and infrastructure for slum dwellers in India should allow for efficient replication of similarly-situated projects elsewhere in India.
