September 2008
In March 2008, Aditi Mehta, through an internship with JVI, participated in the "Urban Typhoon" project that brought together people from around the world with the people of Koliwada, Dharavi to "imagine" the future of Koliwada. The video below is a collection of images of the Koliwada slums in Dharavi, India, courtesy of Aditi Mehta. The accompanying music is "Rise India," a song written and composed by Kavitha Emmanuel of Powerhouse Church in Chennai, India, and performed by the artists of that church, "echoing the prayer of million of Indians whose hearts' cry is to see hope where there is pain, healing where there is hurt, peace where there is confusion, love where there is violence and hatred."
Through its Slum Dweller Assistance Program, JVI is currently advising and assisting justice ventures in designing and implementing a housing and community development program for 100 families living in the slums of India's mega cities. In addition, JVI is actively seeking opportunities to expand its efforts to empower the urban poor in India and around the world.
